Entering Canaan: Removing Idols and Receiving the Land
Numbers 33:50–33:56
Numbers 33:50–56 commands Israel to dispossess Canaan’s inhabitants, destroy its idolatrous objects, divide the land by lot, and refuse coexistence with the practices that would become traps. The instructions are tied to Israel’s historical entrance into the promised land and cannot be transferred to the church as a mandate for coercion. In Christ, God destroys idolatry through the gospel and promises a purified new creation to a people called to holy witness among the nations.

Numbers 33
33:50The LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,
33:51Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, “When you pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
33:52then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their stone idols, destroy all their molten images, and demolish all their high places.
33:53You shall take possession of the land, and dwell therein; for I have given the land to you to possess it.
33:54You shall inherit the land by lot according to your families; to the larger groups you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give a smaller inheritance. Wherever the lot falls to any man, that shall be his. You shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers.
33:55“But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those you let remain of them will be like pricks in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will harass you in the land in which you dwell.
33:56It shall happen that as I thought to do to them, so I will do to you.”
CONTEXTUAL OVERVIEW
At the final camp before Jericho, the Lord speaks about how Israel must inhabit the land. The command joins possession with worship: they are to remove carved images, cast images, and high places because the land cannot be received as a gift from the Lord while its idolatrous systems remain embraced.
The warning is sobering. If Israel leaves those practices and their adherents in a way that permits their idolatry to shape the covenant people, they will become “pricks in your eyes and thorns in your sides.” The issue is not ethnic hostility; it is the spiritual danger of adopting gods and practices that contradict Israel’s exclusive allegiance to the Lord.
HISTORICAL AND LITERARY CONTEXT
These instructions belong to the ancient conquest under Joshua and are given before Israel crosses the Jordan. Scripture elsewhere grounds the judgment in the Canaanites’ entrenched iniquity and also warns Israel that it is not receiving the land because of superior righteousness. Israel remains subject to the same holy God and will face judgment if it follows the same abominations.
The land is apportioned by lot among tribes and clans, with larger groups receiving larger shares. The allotment is a covenant gift administered under God’s decision, not a permanent blank check for later national policies. The church is not Israel’s army; its mission after Christ’s resurrection is to make disciples by proclamation, baptism, service, and suffering love.
SECTION-BY-SECTION ANALYSIS
- Destroy the idols · Numbers 33:52Israel must refuse visible systems of worship that would replace the Lord who redeemed and covenanted with them.
- Divide by lot · Numbers 33:54The inheritance is distributed under God’s rule, preventing tribes from treating the land as self-acquired spoil.
- Israel warned in turn · Numbers 33:51The threat of judgment falls on Israel too if it embraces the practices for which Canaan is judged.
CHRIST IN THIS PASSAGE
The text does not authorize Christians to destroy people, buildings, or cultures in the name of Christ. Jesus’ kingdom advances by witness and the Spirit, and His apostles call believers to flee idolatry while loving neighbors and suffering rather than using coercive force. The conquest command is bound to Israel’s historical reception of the land under God’s direct judgment.
A real canonical connection remains: God will not make peace with idolatry forever. Jesus gives Himself to free people from false gods, and He will finally renew creation without the corrupting worship that destroys human beings. His mission presently sends Christians into plural societies as humble servants who reject idols in their own hearts and invite idolaters—including themselves—to receive mercy and new life.
REFLECTION
Modern idols rarely stand as carved pillars in the backyard, but they still ask for ultimate trust, fear, sacrifice, and identity. Money, sexual desire, political tribe, status, and control can become the “high places” we leave standing because removing them costs too much.
Ask Jesus to expose one allegiance that competes with Him. Renounce it in a practical way, but do not turn that repentance into hostility toward people who do not share your faith. Speak the gospel with humility: Christ calls us out of destructive worship because He intends to make us whole.

Entering Canaan: Removing Idols and Receiving the Land in the larger story
The connection: Israel’s entrance into Canaan requires a decisive break with the idolatry that would undo covenant life. Jesus fulfills God’s holy purpose by freeing sinners from idols through the gospel and preparing a new creation where evil no longer corrupts God’s people.
Respond to the passage
Identify one rival allegiance that has gained too much authority over your decisions. Bring it to Christ in repentance, take one concrete step to dismantle its hold, and treat people caught in other idols as neighbors who need the same mercy you have received.
- Why does the passage connect land possession with the removal of idolatrous structures?
- How does verse 56 prevent Israel from reading the command as proof of its own superiority?
- What changes when Christians apply this passage through the mission of Jesus rather than through conquest?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, reveal every false god that competes for my trust. Thank You for rescuing sinners rather than discarding them. Give me courage to renounce idolatry in my own life and compassion to invite others into Your merciful kingdom. Amen.
